Many traditional turners prefer working with green wood. Come take a trip to the green side in this level-two lathe workshop at Factory Two.
You’ve started learning the lathe- but the ultimate question hits: where do you get the wood?
In this workshop we’ll go all the way from tree to treen. Start quite literally with a log and leave with a finished (or nearly finished) bowl plus an extra sealed blank you can come back on your own and turn later at Factory Two.
What you’ll learn:
• Safely select, section, and cut turning blanks from a log
• Properly seal green wood to prevent cracking and checking as it dries
• Turn and finish (or nearly finish) options for green wood
• Factory Two etiquette and rules for working with green wood in the shop
Green wood turns beautifully, throws long, curling ribbons, and responds differently than fully dried and cured stock. You’ll experience those differences firsthand while practicing the fundamental bowl-turning techniques: roughing, shaping the exterior, hollowing the interior, and finishing options for your piece.
This is a practical, start-to-finish workshop you can apply to found or harvested wood. All tools and materials are provided.
Who it’s for:
Students with at least some lathe experience (beginner to intermediate) who want to explore green wood. Due to pending updates to the lathe checkout process, you do not need to be checked out on the lathe, but you should have taken at least one previous lathe class and/or have some woodturning experience.
Because of the length of the class, feel free to bring a lunch or snack.
