Press Release: Community Listening Sessions Invites Gen Z and Millennial Voices
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Floor is Yours: New Community Listening Series Invites Gen Z and Millennial Voices to Shape the Future of Civic Engagement

FLINT, MI –July 14, 2026 — A community led initiative hosted by Karen Jennings is inviting Gen Z and Millennial residents from across Genesee County to take center stage during "The Floor is Yours," a four-part community listening series designed to elevate the voices of younger generations and better understand their experiences, priorities, and vision for civic leadership.

Rather than asking community members to listen to elected officials or policy experts, The Floor is Yours flips the script. This nonpartisan series creates space for young adults to speak openly about the issues that matter most to them while local leaders, organizations, and community stakeholders listen.

The events are not debates, campaign events, or focus groups. Instead, they are opportunities for authentic conversation that will help inform future civic engagement efforts and provide valuable, data-driven insights into how communities can better connect with and serve younger residents.

"Too often, young people are asked to participate after decisions have already been made," said organizers. "This series is about creating intentional space for listening first. We want to understand what Gen Z and Millennials care about, what barriers they face to civic participation, and what meaningful leadership looks like from their perspective."

Feedback gathered throughout the series will help identify themes, priorities, and opportunities to strengthen civic participation across Genesee County. The information collected will contribute to ongoing efforts to build more responsive, inclusive, and community-centered approaches to civic engagement.

Each session will feature guided conversation in a welcoming environment where participants are encouraged to share their lived experiences, concerns, hopes, and ideas for the future. Participants do not need any prior political involvement or civic experience to attend.
